Sur is a coastal city in Oman's Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, facing the Arabian Sea along a coastline shaped by sheltered bays, rocky headlands, and fishing communities. The city is particularly known for its maritime heritage and traditional wooden dhow building, which remains an important part of its identity. Sur's harbor, whitewashed buildings, and coastal setting reflect its long connection with seafaring and trade. The nearby Al Ayjah district adds another distinctive element, with its historic houses, lighthouse, and waterfront setting. Sur also serves as a convenient base for exploring coastal attractions farther east and west.

Sur's cultural identity is closely tied to boatbuilding and ocean travel. The Fath Al Khair Center presents this heritage through archaeological objects, manuscripts, navigation instruments, and traditional boat models, while the historic Fath Al Khair ghanjah stands in its courtyard. Local shipbuilding reflects skills passed between generations, with craftspeople using traditional techniques to construct wooden vessels. The city also has a strong fishing tradition, and the harbor remains an important part of daily life. Nearby settlements and historic landmarks add further connections to Oman's maritime trade and the communities that developed along the southeastern coast.

Several landmarks provide insight into Sur's coastal landscape and history. Al Sunaysilah Fort stands above the city and offers views toward the surrounding area, while the Al Ayjah Lighthouse overlooks the harbor and coastline. The Fath Al Khair Center provides a detailed introduction to Sur's seafaring traditions. Outside the city, Wadi Shab lies along the coastal road and is known for its canyon, pools, and date palms. Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve, farther east, protects an important nesting area for green turtles and also contains archaeological remains linked to ancient maritime trade.

Seafood is an important part of the cuisine around Sur, reflecting the city's fishing culture and coastal location. Fish and other locally caught marine products are commonly prepared with rice, spices, and traditional Omani accompaniments. Dates, rice, flatbreads, and dishes seasoned with cardamom, saffron, and dried lime are also common across the region. One of Sur's most distinctive details is its continued association with the ghanjah, a large traditional sailing vessel once used for long-distance trade. The city's shipyards, maritime museum, harbor, and fishing traditions together preserve a clear connection between contemporary Sur and Oman's seafaring culture.
