Ballycastle is a small seaside town on the north coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, positioned between the Causeway Coast and the Glens of Antrim. Its harbor faces Rathlin Island and the North Channel, while the surrounding landscape includes beaches, cliffs, farmland, and wooded valleys. Ballycastle Beach stretches along the eastern side of the town, with views across the water toward Rathlin and, in clear conditions, the Scottish coast. The town is also a useful base for exploring nearby coastal landmarks, including the Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede, and the rugged headlands of the Causeway Coast.

Ballycastle has a strong maritime and community identity, with its harbor remaining an important part of local life. The town is closely associated with the Ould Lammas Fair, a traditional annual event featuring livestock, food stalls, crafts, music, and local trading. Foods traditionally linked with the fair include yellowman, a hard honeycomb-style confection, and dulse, an edible seaweed gathered along the coast. The nearby Rathlin Island has its own distinctive Gaelic and maritime heritage, while Ballycastle's position between coastal and upland landscapes has long connected the town with fishing, farming, and trade.

The coastline around Ballycastle offers several notable landscapes and walking areas. Fair Head rises dramatically east of the town, with high basalt cliffs overlooking the sea, while the nearby Murlough Bay combines coastal cliffs, grassland, and mountain scenery. From the harbor, ferries provide access to Rathlin Island, where visitors can explore walking trails and wildlife habitats. Kinbane Castle stands on a narrow coastal headland west of Ballycastle, with the ruins surrounded by steep cliffs and sea views. The town is also close to the Dark Hedges and other attractions associated with the wider Causeway Coast.

Local food reflects Ballycastle's coastal setting, with seafood, dairy products, meat, and produce from County Antrim appearing on menus around the town. The Ould Lammas Fair remains especially notable for its traditional foods, including dulse and yellowman, which are strongly associated with Ballycastle's local identity. The surrounding coast is also important for seabirds and marine wildlife, with Rathlin Island providing one of Northern Ireland's best-known locations for breeding seabirds. Its cliffs support species such as puffins, razorbills, guillemots, and kittiwakes. Ballycastle's harbor, beaches, traditional fair, and access to Rathlin Island give it a distinct role on the Causeway Coast.
