Boysun is a mountain town in the Surkhandarya Region of southern Uzbekistan, set near the western slopes of the Boysuntog‘ range. The surrounding area is known for rugged mountains, deep gorges, caves, and traditional settlements. Boysun’s remote setting has helped preserve distinctive customs, crafts, music, and oral traditions that remain an important part of local identity. The wider Boysun district is recognized by UNESCO for its cultural space, which includes traditional performing arts, rituals, handicrafts, and community practices. The town also serves as a gateway to the varied landscapes of the Boysuntog‘ mountains.

Boysun is particularly noted for its folklore and living traditions. Local cultural practices include seasonal rituals, wedding customs, family ceremonies, folk songs, dances, storytelling, and traditional games. Handicrafts are also closely connected with everyday life, including woven carpets, embroidered suzani textiles, decorated clothing, and metalwork. The annual Boysun Bahori festival in the village of Padang brings together folklore groups, craftspeople, musicians, and performers, with traditional wrestling, kupkari, and other folk activities forming part of the program.

The surrounding mountains provide some of Boysun’s most distinctive attractions. Teshik-Tosh Cave is an important archaeological site in the Boysuntog‘ range, associated with Neanderthal remains and Stone Age artifacts. The region also contains Darband Gorge and the dramatic Iron Gate mountain pass, a natural corridor that historically connected routes between Central Asia, Bactria, and India. The Boysuntog‘ landscape includes steep rock formations, deep valleys, caves, alpine meadows, and river-cut gorges, creating a varied setting around the town and its neighboring villages.

Food and household traditions in Boysun reflect the region’s strong connection with local agriculture and handmade production. Traditional homes may contain a tandoor oven used for baking bread, while locally made textiles and carpets are important features of domestic life. The Boysun Bahori festival also highlights regional dishes alongside music, costumes, crafts, and other forms of cultural expression. This combination of mountain landscapes and carefully maintained folk traditions gives Boysun a distinctive place within Uzbekistan, particularly for visitors interested in the country’s rural cultural heritage and traditional arts.
