Macondé is a small locality in southwestern Mauritius, set on the coastal road between Baie du Cap and Le Morne. It is best known for the dramatic section of road that curves around the base of a dark basalt cliff beside the Indian Ocean. The surrounding landscape combines rocky shoreline, small coves, sugarcane fields and steep slopes rising toward the island’s interior. Unlike the larger resort areas farther north, Macondé remains closely tied to the rural south coast. Its elevated viewpoint provides broad views along the lagoon, reef and rugged coastline toward Baie du Cap.

The area forms part of Mauritius’s culturally diverse south, where Creole traditions developed alongside Indian, African, Malagasy, Chinese and European influences. Nearby fishing villages retain a close connection with the sea, while sugarcane cultivation reflects an industry that has shaped communities across this part of the island. Macondé is also near Le Morne Cultural Landscape, where the mountain became a refuge for escaped enslaved people and is preserved as a symbol of resistance and freedom. Mauritian Creole is widely spoken in everyday life, alongside the other languages used throughout the country.

Macondé Viewpoint is the locality’s main landmark. Steps climb from the coastal road to the top of a rocky outcrop, where the view takes in the winding roadway, turquoise lagoon and waves breaking along the outer reef. The road itself occupies a narrow strip between the cliff and ocean, making this one of the more unusual sections of Mauritius’s coastal route.
